A team of SWGO members visited two schools at villages surrounding San Pedro de Atacama, in which they met with students of different grades and their teachers. The team was composed of Alexander Alfonso (Universidad de La Serena), Roberto Lineros (Universidad Católica del Norte), Soledad Medina (Universidad de La Serena), Tamara Petrosillo (Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María), Alessio Porcelli (Universidad de Antofagasta), Andreas Reisenegger (Universidad Metropolitana de Ciencias de la Educación), and Marcos Santander (University of Alabama). They presented the SWGO project (with the help of a scale model of an SWGO tank produced with a 3D printer), talked about the science and engineering involved, and let the students experiment and play with Physics gadgets we brought along, such as Tesla coils and a plasma ball, with which they had great fun!
In addition to the strong scientific objectives that constitute the pillars of the SWGO project, the collaboration is devoting particular attention to the development of a comprehensive outreach and education program with special attention to its host country, Chile.
If you would like to join us and/or have suggestions or ideas for outreach, please don't hesitate to get in touch with the Outreach and Communications (O&C) coordinators!
